On April 9, 1865, Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered to Union General Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Court House, Virginia. This event marked the end of the American Civil War, which had lasted for four bloody years.

Lee and Grant at Appomattox is a gripping account of the final hours of the war. Based on extensive research and firsthand accounts, this book tells the story of the meeting between the two generals that led to the surrender of the Confederate army.

The book begins with a description of the events leading up to the surrender. Lee's army had been defeated at Petersburg and Richmond, and he was retreating westward in an attempt to join forces with General Joseph E. Johnston. Grant's army was in pursuit, and the two armies were closing in on Appomattox Court House.

On April 8, Lee sent a message to Grant requesting a meeting to discuss terms of surrender. Grant agreed, and the two generals met the next day at the McLean House in Appomattox Court House.

The meeting between Lee and Grant was a brief and formal affair. Lee offered to surrender his army, and Grant accepted. The terms of surrender were generous, and Lee's army was allowed to return home with their horses and sidearms.

The surrender at Appomattox Court House was a turning point in American history. It marked the end of the Civil War and the beginning of the Reconstruction era. The book Lee and Grant at Appomattox provides a fascinating account of this historic event.
