  1. John Quincy Adams was born in Braintree, Massachusetts, on July 11, 1767. His father, John Adams, was the second president of the United States.
  2. Adams was a precocious child. He began studying Latin at the age of 10 and was reading Greek by the age of 12.
  3. Adams attended Harvard College, where he graduated first in his class in 1787. He then studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1790.
  4. Adams served as a diplomat in Europe from 1794 to 1801. He was a key figure in the negotiations that led to the Treaty of Ghent, which ended the War of 1812.
  5. Adams was elected president of the United States in 1824. He served one term, from 1825 to 1829.
  6. Adams was a strong supporter of education. He founded the Smithsonian Institution in 1846.
  7. Adams was a prolific writer. He published over 1,000 books, articles, and speeches.
  8. Adams was a gifted linguist. He spoke seven languages, including Latin, Greek, French, German, Italian, Spanish, and Dutch.
  9. Adams was a passionate advocate for the abolition of slavery. He introduced the first anti-slavery petition to the House of Representatives in 1831.
  10. Adams served in the House of Representatives from 1831 to 1848. He was a strong opponent of the Mexican-American War.
  11. Adams was a staunch defender of the Constitution. He argued that the federal government had no authority to interfere with the institution of slavery.
  12. Adams died in Washington, D.C., on February 23, 1848. He was 80 years old.
  13. Adams is buried in the crypt of the United States Capitol.
