John McCain: A Life of Service, Courage, and Conviction
John McCain was an American politician and military officer who served as a United States Senator from Arizona from 1987 until his death in 2018. He was the Republican nominee for President of the United States in the 2008 election, which he lost to Barack Obama. McCain was a decorated war hero, having served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War. He was a prisoner of war in Vietnam for five and a half years, during which time he was tortured. After his release from prison, McCain returned to the United States and resumed his military career. He retired from the Navy in 1981 and entered politics.
McCain was a conservative Republican, but he was also known for his bipartisanship and willingness to work with Democrats on issues such as campaign finance reform and immigration reform. He was a strong supporter of the military and veterans' issues. McCain died of brain cancer on August 25, 2018, at the age of 81. He is survived by his wife, Cindy, and his seven children.

Early Life and Military Career
John Sidney McCain III was born on August 29, 1936, in the Panama Canal Zone. His father and grandfather were both admirals in the United States Navy. McCain graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1958 and served as a naval aviator. He flew combat missions in the Vietnam War and was shot down over Hanoi in 1967. McCain was captured and held as a prisoner of war for five and a half years. During his captivity, he was tortured and beaten. McCain was released from prison in 1973 and returned to the United States.
After his release from prison, McCain resumed his military career. He served as a liaison officer to the United States Senate and as the director of the Navy's Fighter Weapons School. McCain retired from the Navy in 1981 with the rank of captain.
Political Career
McCain entered politics in 1982, when he was elected to the United States House of Representatives from Arizona's 1st congressional district. He served in the House for two terms and was elected to the United States Senate in 1986. McCain served in the Senate for six terms. He was a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and the Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee.
