Sirleaf was born in Monrovia, Liberia, in 1938. Her father was a successful businessman and her mother was a teacher. Sirleaf attended school in Liberia and the United States, and she later earned a degree in economics from Harvard University. After working in the private sector, Sirleaf entered politics in the 1970s. She was elected to the Liberian Senate in 1985, and she served as Minister of Finance from 1992 to 1994.

In 1997, Sirleaf ran for president of Liberia. She lost the election, but she remained active in politics. In 2005, she was elected president of Liberia, becoming the first woman president of Africa. Sirleaf served two terms as president, and she left office in 2018.

Sirleaf's memoir is a fascinating account of her life and career. She writes about her childhood in Liberia, her education in the United States, and her entry into politics. She also discusses the challenges she faced as president, including the civil war that ravaged Liberia for many years. Sirleaf's memoir is a powerful and inspiring story that will resonate with readers around the world.
