About the Author
James Stockdale was a U.S. Navy pilot who was shot down over North Vietnam in 1965. He was held as a prisoner of war for seven years, during which time he was tortured and subjected to other forms of abuse. After his release, Stockdale went on to serve as a vice president of the United States and a professor at the Naval War College. He died in 2005.
