In 1957, Doran was selected for the SAS. The SAS is an elite special forces unit known for its rigorous training and demanding operations. Doran quickly proved himself to be a natural soldier, excelling in every aspect of the grueling selection process. He was a skilled marksman, a proficient hand-to-hand combatant, and a gifted survivalist.

Doran's first taste of combat came during the Malayan Emergency, a communist insurgency that plagued the country from 1948 to 1960. As a member of the SAS, Doran was involved in numerous covert operations, often operating deep behind enemy lines. He played a key role in tracking down and eliminating communist guerrillas, earning a reputation for his bravery and resourcefulness.

After Malaya, Doran was deployed to a variety of other conflict zones, including Oman, Borneo, and Northern Ireland. In each of these campaigns, he displayed the same unwavering courage and determination that had become his trademark. He was wounded several times during his career, but he always refused to be evacuated, preferring to stay with his comrades and continue fighting.

Doran's military career was not without controversy. In 1972, he was arrested and charged with murder in connection with the death of an unarmed IRA suspect. Doran was eventually acquitted of all charges, but the incident cast a shadow over his reputation.

Despite the challenges he faced, Doran remained a loyal and dedicated member of the SAS until his retirement in 1976. He continued to serve his country in a variety of roles, including as a bodyguard for British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.

In 2005, Doran was awarded the Military Cross for his gallantry in action during the Malayan Emergency. The Military Cross is one of the highest awards for bravery that can be bestowed upon a member of the British Armed Forces.

Doran passed away in 2013 at the age of 79. He is remembered as one of the most courageous and decorated soldiers of his generation. His story is a testament to the indomitable spirit of the SAS and the unwavering loyalty of those who serve in its ranks.
