Early Life and Career
Elia Kazan was born in Constantinople, Turkey, on September 7, 1909. His parents were Greek immigrants, and he grew up in a poor neighborhood in New York City. Kazan began acting as a child, and he made his Broadway debut in 1930. He quickly became one of the most respected actors in New York, and he starred in a number of successful plays, including "Death of a Salesman" and "A Streetcar Named Desire." In 1947, Kazan made his directorial debut with the film "Gentleman's Agreement." The film was a critical and commercial success, and it won Kazan an Academy Award for Best Director.
Middle Career
In the 1950s, Kazan directed a number of controversial films, including "On the Waterfront" and "East of Eden." These films explored themes of corruption, violence, and redemption. Kazan's work was often criticized by the left, who accused him of being a McCarthyite. However, Kazan defended his work, arguing that he was simply trying to tell the truth about American society.
Later Career
In the 1960s and 1970s, Kazan continued to direct films, but he also began to write plays and novels. His work from this period is less well-known than his earlier work, but it is still highly regarded by critics. Kazan died in 2003 at the age of 94.
