A Life of Challenges
Amy was born in Las Vegas, Nevada, in 1979. From the moment she was born, she faced challenges. She was born with a rare genetic condition called fibular hemimelia, which meant that she was born without fibula bones in her legs. This made her legs very weak and unstable.
Despite her challenges, Amy lived a full and active life. She played sports, danced, and even competed in beauty pageants. But when she was 19 years old, her life took a dramatic turn. She developed a bacterial infection in her legs, and both of her legs had to be amputated below the knee.
Learning to Snowboard
After her amputations, Amy was determined to get back to living an active life. She tried out several different sports, but nothing really clicked. Then, one day, she decided to try snowboarding.
At first, snowboarding was very difficult for Amy. She had to learn how to balance on her prosthetic legs, and she often fell. But she didn't give up. She kept practicing, and eventually she started to get the hang of it.
In 2011, Amy entered her first snowboarding competition. She didn't win, but she didn't give up. She kept competing, and eventually she started to win medals.
In 2014, Amy achieved her dream of competing in the Paralympic Winter Games. She won a bronze medal in the snowboard cross event.
