Excerpt from Black Boy Out of Time
I was born in 1954, the year of the Brown v. Board of Education Supreme Court decision. I grew up in a segregated world, where black people were treated as second-class citizens. I attended all-black schools and lived in a black neighborhood. I was taught that I was inferior to white people, and that I should never expect to achieve great things.
But I refused to accept this. I knew that I was just as smart and capable as any white person. I worked hard in school and excelled in my studies. I went on to college and earned a degree in engineering. I got a good job and raised a family. But even though I had achieved success in the white world, I never forgot the racism that I had experienced as a child.
The racism that I experienced shaped my understanding of the world. It taught me that I had to be strong and resilient. It taught me that I couldn't let anyone tell me what I could or could not achieve. It taught me that I had to fight for my rights and the rights of others.
I am proud of the man I have become. I am a successful engineer, a loving husband and father, and a an active member of my community. But I know that I would not be where I am today without the experiences that I had as a black boy in a white world.
