Beautiful Hero: How We Survived the Khmer Rouge

Bou Meng was just 14 years old when the Khmer Rouge took over her country. She and her family were forced to leave their home in Phnom Penh and march to a labor camp in the countryside. At the camp, they were subjected to hard labor and daily propaganda. Bou Meng watched as her loved ones died around her.
But Bou Meng refused to give up hope. She secretly learned to read and write, and she began to share her stories with other survivors. In 1979, the Vietnamese army invaded Cambodia and liberated the people from the Khmer Rouge. Bou Meng was finally able to return home.
Bou Meng's story is a testament to the strength of the human spirit. She survived unimaginable horrors and emerged from the experience with her spirit intact. Beautiful Hero is her inspiring story of survival and resilience.
