A Daughter of the Mexican Revolution

Guadalupe del Rio was born in 1917 in the small village of Nochistlán, Mexico, amidst the turmoil of the Mexican Revolution. Her family fled to the United States when she was just a child, seeking refuge from the violence and upheaval that ravaged their homeland.

Growing up in Los Angeles, Guadalupe faced the challenges of poverty and discrimination, but she possessed an unquenchable thirst for knowledge and a determination to succeed. She excelled in school, graduating from high school as valedictorian.

Breaking Barriers at UCLA

In 1939, Guadalupe enrolled at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA),where she continued to excel academically. She was the only Mexican American woman in her library science program and faced prejudice and skepticism from some of her peers.

Despite these obstacles, Guadalupe remained steadfast in her pursuit of her dreams. She graduated from UCLA in 1944 with a degree in library science and went on to become the first Chicana librarian in the United States.

A Pioneer in Chicana Librarianship

After graduating, Guadalupe worked as a librarian at the East Los Angeles Public Library, where she dedicated herself to serving the needs of the local Latino community. She organized story hours, developed Spanish-language collections, and became a trusted resource for patrons seeking information and support.

Guadalupe's work extended beyond the library walls. She was an active member of the American Library Association and the California Library Association, where she advocated for the representation and advancement of Chicana librarians.

A Legacy of Leadership and Inspiration

Throughout her career, Guadalupe del Rio mentored countless young Chicanas and encouraged them to pursue careers in librarianship. She served as a role model and inspiration to a generation of librarians, demonstrating the power of education and the importance of giving back to the community.

In 1977, Guadalupe retired from the East Los Angeles Public Library after 33 years of dedicated service. She continued to be active in the library profession and remained a staunch advocate for social justice and equal access to information.
